In the late ‘60s, the VW Beetle was a small family car. Even BMW had one, which was known as the Isetta. Fiat also made many copies of the 500. In a post-World War II world, access to raw materials was complicated, so automakers focused on smaller, more affordable cars. Unlike the Isetta or the 500, the Beetle went on to become an iconic car because it was adopted by the counterculture movement.
