Part of the reason why electric vehicles play second fiddle to hybrids and internal combustion vehicles is the range anxiety question, which is compounded by the iffy charging infrastructure. Extended-range powertrains eliminate this concern by using internal combustion to generate electricity for both the high-voltage battery and the drive units.
